From Volume 1 of Britten's folk song arrangements and dedicated to Beata Mayer, daughter of Britten and Pears's American friends William and Elizabeth Mayer. It was composed sometime before 20 February 1941, which is believed to be the date of the song's first performance by Britten and Pears (part of a concert at Elks Auditorium in Providence, Rhode Island). It is published in 2 versions: high voice and piano and medium voice and piano.
