The Plough Boy: Medium voice

Medium Voice, Piano

From Volume 3 of Britten's folksong arrangements, which was dedicated to the soprano Joan Cross. It was composed sometime before 27 September 1945, which is believed to be the date of the song's first performance by Britten and Pears (part of a concert at Melksham Music Club in Melksham House). The tune is by W. Shield and had first been used by Britten in 1936 for his music to the film documentary Around the village green. The folksong has been published in 3 versions: high voice and piano, medium voice and piano and high voice and orchestra.
