Benjamin Britten’s

Song Catalogue

Fish in the unruffled lakes

High voice, Piano

Audio extract courtesy of Onyx Classics (2010). James Geer (tenor) and Malcolm Martineau (piano).

This is a collection of W H Auden settings from the late 1930s and 1940s, published in 1997. It is a mixture of previously published songs and others appearing in print for the first time since their composition. Several of the numbers, including 'The sun shines down' and 'Night covers up the rigid land', were most likely intended for the never completed second volume of On This Island (early editions of this 1937 cycle were subtitled 'Volume 1').
